Welcome to Thomas Hand Period Furniture. My name is Tom Hand and I have been building reproduction pieces
for over thirty years. Many of my furniture pieces are in local area homes and are often displayed in
juried shows including those at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Buying a fine piece of furniture is the same as buying any piece of fine art. The skill, care and time involved in creating the piece is commensurate with the quality of construction and the amount of time you will own the piece — and even whether or not you will pass that furniture through the generations. I hand sign and number each piece that I build. It is built to your customization and satisfaction, and I encourage you to be involved in the process. You're welcome to see the progress of your furniture at any time during the construction.
If you choose to purchase one of my reproduction pieces, I hope that it will give you the same enjoyment in its use as it gave me in the construction.
Furniture Care
There are a few
things to consider in the use and care of any fine furniture. Direct sunlight
can fade the finish of any wood surface just as it can fabrics. Solid mahogany furniture should not
be placed near heat sources as dryness can cause some parts to crack, just as the originals did.
Caution should be used with any liquids coming in contact, and also remember that cold and hot
containers on furniture can damage a finish as well. Any high-quality furniture polish may be used
on this piece — I have had good results using "Stickley" (tm) Brand furniture dressing.
