Pencil Post Bed

One of the most important furnishings in a colonial home was the owner's bed. So important, in fact, that most were made to be taken down quickly in the event of a fire and were the first piece saved.

This pencil post has tapered hexagonal posts, with what are called "lamb's tongue" carvings where it begins to taper up to the top finials. The canopy top, or "teesters" as they were called, could have been used to hang light fabrics to block light from the sleeping user.

This pencil post is made from soild cherry, four inches square at the bottom to one inch at the top. The head and footboards are of solid one inch thick cherry and will provide a lifetime of use. I would not recommend a large size, such as king size, as the proportions would not be as aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
