Six Board Blanket Chest

A common companion to a colonial home owner's bed was a Six Board Chest, which usually sat at the foot of the bed. The chest generally held blankets, bed linens, clothes or may have contained valuables, in a small "till" which was located under the locking chest top.

It was called a "Six Board" Chest because it was made form six wide boards: a top, bottom, front, back and ends. There were many versions of this chest made, but I find this one of particular interest, with its "bread board top" and tasteful moldings.

As with most pieces I build it is made from solid wood-cherry in this case. But it can be constructed from any cabinet-grade wood of the buyer's choice. It has a rubbed varnish finish, which will stand up well for many years, but can be finished in any number of colors or styles.
